Julia has taught writing workshops in schools for over a decade, making over 180 visits to schools since her first book was published, and working with over fifteen hundred children on the Patron of Reading scheme.

Her most recent Patron of Reading school, Amesbury Archer Primary, has asked her to create a new series of workshop days for 2025/26, to share with other schools in their academy trust. In response, Julia dreamt up EPIC Writing Days.

What are EPIC Writing Days?

EPIC Writing Days are day-long workshops for primary schools, specifically designed to stretch ARE pupils and challenge GD children. The focus for EPIC days is on comic writing to entertain.

Who are EPIC Writing Days for?

EPIC Writing Days are for groups of up to 20 pupils, either ARE or GD, depending on the day, coming from different schools to spend the day at a local host school.

How does this work?

There will be a series of 6 EPIC Writing Days scheduled across the school year, arranged as 3 pairs of days:

  • Day 1: Upper Key Stage 2 ~ Greater Depth

  • Day 2: Upper Key Stage 2 ~ Age Related Expectations

  • Day 3: Key Stage 1 ~ Greater Depth

  • Day 4: Key Stage 1 ~ Age Related Expectations

  • Day 5: Lower Key Stage 2 ~ Greater Depth

  • Day 6: Lower Key Stage 2 ~ Age Related Expectations

What does it cost?

The cost is £37.50 plus VAT per child per day. Pupils must be accompanied by an adult, and will need to provide their own lunch and transport to and from the host school.

Does my school have to send children to every workshop?

No, you can book as many or as few children as you wish for each workshop day. However, you will need to make all your bookings before the first workshop in the series, so that the host school can plan accordingly.

Can my school host?

Yes! If no dates are showing on this page, and you think your school might like to host a series of EPIC Writing Days, please contact Julia by email or call her on 07790 102857.

The host school will need to be able to accommodate 20 children (and Julia) throughout each of the six days. To facilitate this, the host school will determine the most suitable dates with Julia, and will receive 4 free places for each workshop, plus a contribution of £100 per workshop day towards the running costs.

A minimum of 12 paid places per workshop day will need to be booked by participating schools for the series to be financially viable. Julia will publicise the days through her own network, and will liaise with schools wishing to book, but it would be helpful if the host school could circulate information to other schools in their own network.
